Summer Road Trip in Italy | 6D5N Amalfi Coast

by - March 30, 2020

Blessed to have another bucket list destination ticked off my list!
I wanted to visit Positano in the summer ever since I saw my senior posting pictures of this place. So glad to be able to do a road trip in Italy last summer. I'm writing this admist all the covid19 cases going on... Italy is in such a bad situation atm and I really do hope everything gets better soon. I have so much more to explore around Italy :((( No one's probably planning a trip here now but I'll just keep these as memories, and for future references because I'm sure it'll all be well.

Getting There
The Amalfi Coast is a coastline in southern Italy and it's not too far away from Rome. For this trip, we did not go to other parts of Italy but focused on the coast itself. We flew right into Naples International Airport as it is the nearest airport to the coast. There's also this recommended route map done by positano.com so check it out here if you're not planning to drive.

When To Visit
We went in early June right after our finals. It was the transition/ start of summer so it can still get quite chilly in the morning and at night. However, May-June and September-October would be the best times because it won't be too cold plus you'll beat the summer crowd.

Getting Around
Personally think it's the easiest to travel around the coast with a car. However, do note that it's left-hand driving in Italy plus the roads are really narrow and the drivers here are really impatient and aggresive as well. I had so many mini heart attacks in the passenger seat omg. You'll need to pay parking almost everywhere (and crazily expensive at Positano). Public transportation is possible but not as convenient so do take note on the bus times.

Accommodation
It's probably the most convenient to stay at Sorrento because it's not far away from everything else. We stayed in a really cheap airbnb in the middle of nowhere that I would definitely not recommend. It was really troublesome to drive around the winding roads everyday :x

Itinerary
Day 1: Naples & Pompeii
After collecting our car, we went for lunch at Starita Pizzeria. However, we didn't manage to get a seat at the restaurant nor did we get parking so we took away some pizzas and had them at Viviani Park. The pizzas were so good and inexpensive!!!

The scary narrow roads and drivers definitely left a bad impression for us and we decided to skip exploring Naples and headed to Pompeii, one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is sort of on the way while driving to the coast.
The weather was the worst on the first day and rained quite heavily when we were at the Pompeii Archaeological Park
Amphitheatre of Pompeii
We spent a few hours there and headed back to our airbnb to check-in.

Day 2: Capri
We drove to the port at Sorrento and took the ferry to Capri. The best way to explore Capri would be by boat and we booked our boat tour on Get Your Guide beforehand. I think it's more or less the same getting it on the spot. We didn't enter the Blue Grotto because there was a really long queue and it's an extra £5-10. We saw many private boats and were thinking that it would've been really nice if we rented one by ourselves with the sunbathing bed D;

We made a lunch stop at Bagni Tiberio Capri and played at their private beach for awhile before heading to the chairlift.

So we actually hiked all the way up for an hour omg because we asked some locals and directions weren't exactly clear... but we didn't expect it to be so steep and tiring. Views were great though (would still choose to take the bus up).
Monte Solaro Chairlift
It was all foggy at the top oh wells I just wanted the chairlift experience.

We then left Capri and went back to Sorrento for dinner at Tavernallegra.

Day 3: Sorrento
This day was quite chill because we needed a rest after an intense day hahaha. We spent the whole day strolling around the streets of Sorrento, and of course had lots of gelato.

Brunch stop @ Bar Syrenuse Sorrento

Raki Gelato

The famous lemon slushie you can get basically everywhere in Amalfi.
Gelateria Primavera
This shop has a HUGE variety of gelato flavours to choose from!! But I think it's kind of a tourist trap because the prices were way higher than what we usually have.

Dinner @ Il Convivio

Day 4: Positano & Furore
AAAAND THE MAIN STAR OF THE TRIP >>> POSITANO!
Be there early in the morning to avoid the crowds! It was slightly cloudy when we were there and got really sunny by noon but the whole place was filled with tourists by then.

There are restrictions on street parking plus the roads are really narrow so the it's best to just park your vehicle at carparks over there. There are plenty of them and I forgot which one we parked at. They are more or less the same and ofc pretty pricy. I think we paid like €35 per vehicle.

We had a quick lunch and then went for kayaking and water activities! Passed by some really gorgeous dessert shops around and ofc couldn't resist!

Hotel Buca di Bacco

Fior di Furore
It's easy to get there because everything is along the coast. At first we weren't really sure as we just drove on the bridge and couldn't get the view of it like what we saw online. However, it was closed due to the falling stone walls and there was no way we could get down to the beach so we left after taking a shot here.
I wanted to get a picture like this yknow... and chill at the beach :c

We then drove back and made a stop at one of the beaches nearby to chill before heading back for dinner at Sorrento.

Day 5: Minori, Mairori, Ravelllo, Atrani & Amalfi
On this day, we continued with the coastal towns further away. Minori and Mairori are the smallest towns there, you'll basically drive past the whole town within a minute.

Ravello
Ravello is situated higher up and therefore you can catch the panorama of the coast from above! The city is famous for musical events especially during the summer. Love the architecure and vibes here.

Lunch @ Babel Wine Bar Deli & Art

Baffone

Atrani
We made a quick photo stop here only and ahh look at this beautiful place! Sadly part of the building was under renovation.

If you don't already know, Amalfi is famous for its (HUGE) lemons. Just look at these!

Amalfi
Amalfi itself is a town on the Amalfi coast and of course the largest one.

Duomo di Amalfi

Gelateria Artigianale Amalfi

Dinner @ La Taverna Di Masaniello

By the coast-

Day 6
We checked out of our airbnb, returned our cars and went home on this day.
Last gelato @ Venchi before leaving-

Car Rental & Parking  £80
Tour, ferry, chairlift, kayak - £45
